Top 5 Summer Hikes in Durango

Summer is finally here which means we have a plethora of outdoor activities at our disposal and the summer months are a perfect time to explore the mountains while hiking the scenic trails of Durango. I have put together a list of some of the best hikes in the Durango area so whether you are a local or just visiting, be sure to plan a hike and share your pictures with us on social media!
Smelter Mountain Trail
Are you wanting to hike but you have afternoon plans? Then this is the perfect hike for you! The trail is a local favorite located off the right of CR 210 across the highway from Nature's Oasis. Once you have climbed the 1,000 feet in elevation gain, you will be rewarded with scenic views of downtown Durango and the class III-IV Smelter rapids at the base of the mountain. After you have taken in the beauty of Durango, head back to town and grab lunch at one of the local restaurants.
Spud Lake Trail
The family-friendly hike’s access point is located 30 miles north of Durango on Highway 550 and Forest Road 591 and will require a 4WD vehicle due to the rough terrain. The hike is 3 miles of breathtaking views and has a 419 foot elevation gain. Spud Lake Trail is also home to many beaver dams and is named after Spud mountain, which can be seen from the trail.
Engineer Mountain
For a more challenging hike, Engineer offers 12.7 miles of spectacular views and a 3,106 foot elevation gain to reach a summit of 13,000 feet. The summer is the perfect time for this hike where you will enjoy blooming wildflowers and a panoramic view of the Rocky Mountains. Be sure to pack plenty of snacks and water so you don’t run out of energy! The access point is located 30 miles north of Durango and 13.5 miles south of Silverton on the east side of Hwy 550.
Animas River Trail
The Animas River Trail is nestled within Durango and runs alongside the Animas River and is a paved surface. This is a perfect trail if you are wanting to enjoy a quick walk with your dog or catch up with a friend while taking in the amazing views of Durango. You never know where the trail will take you as it stretches 7 miles through town and is the perfect walking distance to many local shops and restaurants!
Falls Creek Loop
Located in the San Juan National forest, this hike is perfect for all levels of hikers and the many forks on the trail offer a magnificent scenic route and views of a waterfall. The trail is 4 miles in total and is perfect for a quick day hike. The access point is located just north of downtown Durango off of CR 205.
